No Lack of Christmas Songs in Latin Music

0

I just read an NPR article about lack of new Christmas songs in pop music, a problem we don’t have in Latin music.

Here in Latino Music Café I’ve published about 3 reviews on new Christmas albums in the past two weeks. I’ve blogged about the Banco Popular Christmas special “Tiempos de Aguinaldo“, the Victor Manuelle Christmas special, “Memorias de Navidad“, and Jose Nogueras new album “La Vivo y La Gozo“.

And there are more coming, like the NG2 “Mi Primera Navidad“.

The Victor Manuelle, Jose Nogueras, and NG2 albums all are about new songs. I’m sure I’m still missing some new Christmas songs from other Latin music artists. It’s hard to keep up.

Michael Buble in Christmas album cover
Michael Buble’s “Christmas” continues to be very popular, and also includes a version of “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.

Chris Klimek’s NPR’s article “Why Are There No New Christmas Songs” highlights the opposite situation in pop music. To make his point, Chris uses the Mariah Carey song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as the main example. The song was released 25 years ago and it wasn’t until this year when it went up to making it the #1 in “The Hot 100” Billboard chart.

In that respect, here are the top Christmas albums in Billboard as of this writing:

#9 “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (1965)
#11 “Christmas” by Michael Buble (2011)
#16 “Merry Christmas” by Mariah Carey (1994)

On the Latin music charts, here are the top Christmas albums:

#9 “Memorias de Navidad” by Victor Manuelle (2019)
#20 “Tiempos de Aguinaldo” by Banco Popular de Puerto Rico (2019)

One more thing to be thankful is that Latin music artists keep our Christmas traditions alive by releasing new albums every year.
