Humberto Ramirez’s concert with Puerto Rico’s Symphonic Orchestra titled Jazz Sinfónico was a delightful experience for my wife and me and the audience in attendance. The concert was held at the Sala Sinfónica Pablo Casals of the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce, Puerto Rico this past Saturday, September 23rd.

The concert featured the fusion of Humberto Ramirez’s jazz big band with Puerto Rico’s Symphonic Orchestra, and the collaboration with the Symphonic Orchestra’s associate director, maestro Rafael Enrique Irizarry was delightful. Maestro Irizarry not only directed masterfully but also made great talking points when addressing the audience in between songs with Humberto Ramirez.

We weren’t allowed to take photos, but I sneaked this one of Humberto doing a solo during Jazz Sinfónico.

The repertoire was selected from Humberto’s recordings and adapted for the symphonic format. It was evident that the audience enjoyed the 2-hour concert and gave several standing ovations throughout the evening.

With the success of Jazz Sinfónico, I’m hoping a future collaboration will follow at some point, perhaps during the next Symphonic Orchestra concert series. Maybe a twist to the repertoire would be to include a couple of classical songs featuring instrumental solos within them.

We will be patiently waiting for the next Jazz Sinfónico concert.
