If you are a fan of jazz and Latin music, you won’t want to miss the 2024 Puerto Rico Jazz Jam, a two-day event that will feature some of the best musicians and singers on the island and beyond. The event, organized by the renowned trumpet player, composer, arranger, and musical director Humberto Ramírez, will take place on January 26 and 27, 2024, at the Sala René Marqués of the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce.
Tribute to La Lupe
The Puerto Rico Jazz Jam is an annual celebration of jazz and Afro-Puerto Rican music running since 2010. This year, the Puerto Rico Jazz Jam will honor the memory and legacy of La Lupe, the Cuban singer who was known as “The Queen of Latin Soul”. La Lupe was a flamboyant and controversial performer who captivated audiences with her powerful voice, expressive gestures, and emotional delivery. She sang a variety of styles, such as bolero, son, guaracha, rumba, and soul. She collaborated with artists such as Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaría.
The 2024 Puerto Rico Jazz Jam will feature Humberto Ramírez and his Big Band, who will likely perform some of La Lupe’s most famous songs, such as “Qué Te Pedí”, “Puro Teatro”, and “La Tirana”. The Big Band will also accompany the special guest, Michelle Brava, a Puerto Rican singer and actress who will interpret La Lupe’s songs with her own style and charisma. Michelle Brava has a long and successful music, theater, and television career. She has recorded albums in genres such as pop, rock, salsa, and merengue. She has also starred in musicals such as “Rent”, “Evita”, and “In the Heights”.
Other Great Artists at 2024 Puerto Rico Jazz Jam
The 2024 Puerto Rico Jazz Jam will also feature other amazing artists, such as Sounds of Percussion, a group of percussionists who will showcase the rhythms and sounds of bomba and plena; Furito Ríos and Standard Bomba Quintet, a band that will blend jazz and bomba with original compositions and arrangements; and Henry Cole on Drums, a drummer who will lead a quartet of virtuosos who will explore the possibilities of jazz improvisation.
