The much-anticipated recording collaboration of Salsa music stars Rub\u00e9n Blades<\/a> and Cheo Feliciano titled “Eba Say Aj\u00e1<\/em>” was finally\u00a0released in May 2012.<\/p>\n

This project was in the works for many years (6), before Rub\u00e9n Blades began work in the Panama government.<\/p>\n

“Eba Say Aj\u00e1<\/em>” is a joint album of Cheo Feliciano<\/a><\/em> and Rub\u00e9n Blades in which each singer performs songs from the other singer. The music and Cheo’s voice were recorded shortly before Ruben started as Minister of Tourism in Panama. Rub\u00e9n added his voice after the 25th Anniversary of Seis del Solar tour.<\/p>\n

The is a great cast of musicians that participate in “Eba Say Aj\u00e1<\/em>“. It includes musical director and arranger Luis Garc\u00eda on the Tres guitar, Luis Mar\u00edn on piano and vibes, Cachiro Thompson and Georgie Padilla on congas, Charlie Sierra on timbales, and Pedro Perez on bass. The chorus is done by Luis’ brother Darvel Garc\u00eda, Wichy Camacho, Batacumbele alumni Chegu\u00ed Ramos, and Primi Cruz.<\/p>\n

The album was produced by Rub\u00e9n Blades Productions. It was dedicated to the memory of Puerto Rico’s Z-93 radio programmer Pedro Arroyo, who created and institutionalized the yearly “D\u00eda Nacional de la Salsa<\/em>” event.<\/p>\n

Where Did “Eba Say Aj\u00e1” Come From?<\/h3>\n

Cheo Feliciano and Rub\u00e9n Blades only coincided briefly to record simultaneously a couple of songs in “Eba Say Aj\u00e1<\/em>“<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The album title comes from a phrase Cheo Feliciano used at the beginning of his career\u2026.supposedly from a purposely derivation of the phrase in English “everybody say aj\u00e1<\/em>“. Bobby Cruz later adopted the phrase and used it even more extensively than Cheo ever did.<\/p>\n

Rub\u00e9n Blades, an admirer of both Cheo Feliciano since his Joe Cuba days, and of Bobby Cruz and Richie Ray, adopted the phrase during his time with his band “Seis del Solar”.<\/p>\n

Because both Cheo and Rub\u00e9n had used the phrase at some point in their careers, they named the album “Eba Say Aj\u00e1”.<\/p>\n

What I Liked About “Eba Say Aj\u00e1<\/em>“:<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Having Rub\u00e9n Blades and Cheo Feliciano singing each other Salsa hits is a treat in itself. Enough said!<\/p>\n

\u2022 The use of a vibraphone instead of metal winds was a perfect choice for this album. Both Cheo and Rub\u00e9n used the instrument during their respective careers.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The musical arrangements, adapting the songs originally recorded with winds to the vibraphone format were done with creativity and good taste.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The adaptation of the Cheo Feliciano (authored by Tite Curet Alonso) song “Franqueza Cruel<\/em>” to a Salsa format and performed by Rub\u00e9n Blades was masterful.<\/p>\n

\u2022 One of my favorite songs on the album is “Busca Lo Tuyo<\/em>“. In this Eddie Palmieri<\/a><\/em>-Cheo Feliciano salsa classic, Rub\u00e9n Blades does a masterful job with original “soneos<\/em>“. In the song he says the most creative phrase of the album when he introduces the piano solo by saying “…no es Palmieri, pero es bueno; Luis Marin\u2026.te dos tin g\u00fce<\/em>“.<\/p>\n

\u2022 My other favorite song interpreted by Cheo Feliciano is “Inodoro Perez<\/em>“. This is the only new song on the album.<\/p>\n

Suggestions About “Eba Say Aj\u00e1<\/em>“:<\/h3>\n

\u2022 One of the things I missed in this album was having Cheo and Ruben sing songs together, in duet format. They only did a duet in the “bolero<\/em>” “Si Te Dicen<\/em>“, and in “Lo Bueno Ya Viene<\/em>“, a “bolero<\/em>” that turns into “guajira<\/em>” in which they exchange “soneos<\/em>“. I would have loved them to exchange “soneos<\/em>” in a couple of Salsa songs. The fact that they didn’t record most of the album voices together limited the ability to do this effectively.<\/p>\n

\u2022 I perceived Cheo Feliciano’s interpretation of “Manuela<\/em>” as a bit forced. It didn’t seem a good fit for Cheo’s style at this point in his career.<\/p>\n

\u2022 “De Aqu\u00ed Pa’ All\u00e1<\/em>” was a good song interpreted by Rub\u00e9n Blades. But I would have preferred some other Cheo Feliciano salsa hit, like Rub\u00e9n Blades own composition “No Vuelvo M\u00e1s<\/em>“, which Cheo sang in his 1976 album “The Singer<\/em>“.<\/p>\n

My Recommendation:<\/h3>\n

\u2022 “Eba Say Aj\u00e1<\/em>” is a classic salsa lover’s dream album, as it brings two stars of Salsa music together to record each other’s past Salsa hits.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The arrangements and adaptations were excellent. It has a solid performance by the studio band put together and directed by the experienced maestro, and Cheo Feliciano’s frequent collaborator, Luis Garc\u00eda.<\/p>\n

\u2022 One curious fact of this album is that even though both Cheo Feliciano<\/a><\/em> and Rub\u00e9n Blades<\/a> used the phrase “Eba Say Aj\u00e1<\/em>” during their careers, none of them used it during this album.<\/p>\n

\u2022 If you like Salsa music, particularly the ’70s and ’80s style, you will love these two great Salsa singers performing in this album.<\/p>\n
