{"id":2873,"date":"2011-07-29T14:17:29","date_gmt":"2011-07-29T21:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/latinomusiccafe.com\/?p=2873"},"modified":"2017-08-23T09:17:10","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T13:17:10","slug":"poncho-sanchez-warms-jazz-alley-latin-jazz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinomusiccafe.com\/2011\/07\/29\/poncho-sanchez-warms-jazz-alley-latin-jazz\/","title":{"rendered":"Poncho Sanchez Warms Jazz Alley with Latin Jazz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Poncho Sanchez brought some Latin heat from California and energized the Seattle\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazzalley.com\">Dimitrious\u2019 Jazz Alley<\/a> stage with a different repertoire than from his previous presentations.<\/p>\n<p>I saw a more energized Poncho Sanchez, sporting a shorter beard.<\/p>\n<h3>Poncho&#8217;s Presentation at the Jazz Alley<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2876\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2876\" style=\"width: 218px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/latinomusiccafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Chano-Pozo-and-Dizzy-Gillespie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2876 size-medium\" title=\"Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie\" src=\"https:\/\/latinomusiccafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Chano-Pozo-and-Dizzy-Gillespie-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"At the Jazz Alley, Poncho played music from Chano and Dizzy.\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As I had hoped, Poncho Sanchez played a medley of the Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo repertoire and announced that his next recording will in fact be an album of the music of Dizzy and Chano with the collaboration of Terrance Blanchard on trumpet, as I had indicated in my pervious blog.<\/p>\n<p>The Dizzy-Chano medley included their classics \u201cTin Tin Deo\u201d and \u201cManteca\u201d, both of which Poncho has recorded separately in previous albums.<\/p>\n<p>Poncho started off the set with his now signature lead-off \u201cOne Mint Julep\u201d which he recorded in his 2003 album \u201cOut of Sight\u201d and also included in his 2004 Live recording \u201cPoncho at Montreux\u201d. From his previous visits he repeated the \u201cWillie Bobo Medley\u201d, a favorite included in his Grammy nominated album \u201cPsychedelic Blues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Poncho followed this with \u201cShiny Stockings\u201d as a tribute to Frank Foster who just passed away a couple of days ago. Foster was a vital collaborator of the Count Basie Orchestra, and Poncho had recorded his standard \u201cShiny Stockings\u201d in his 1985 album \u201cEl Conguero\u201d.\u00a0 Poncho continued the set with the Afro-Cuban\u00a0\u201cShanko\u201d, the Soul \u201cRaise Your Hand\u201d, and the Salsa \u201cDonde Va Chi chi?\u201d, the latter two songs from his 2007 album \u201cRaise Your Hand\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2877\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2877\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/latinomusiccafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Poncho-Sanchez-at-Jazz-Alley-July-2011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2877 size-medium\" title=\"Poncho Sanchez at Jazz Alley (July 2011)\" src=\"https:\/\/latinomusiccafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Poncho-Sanchez-at-Jazz-Alley-July-2011-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"Poncho Sanchez at the Jazz Alley (July 2011)\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poncho Sanchez at the Jazz Alley (July 2011)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Seattle audience has adopted Poncho Sanchez as a local favorite, showing this with an almost full Jazz Alley on the 1st set on a Thursday evening.\u00a0As I have mentioned in previous posts, Poncho\u2019s music is an easy blend of genres that go through Jazz, Soul, and Salsa, and Poncho and his band make it and enjoyable experience without taking themselves too seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Poncho was a bit more communicative with the audience this time around, sharing the news of the upcoming new CD, and also random stories like the origin of the song \u201cChanko\u201d with is a mix of \u201cchange\u201d and some incidents that occurred during one of his trips to Japan when the song was being composed.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike previous times, the set didn\u2019t have a lot of danceable music, but Poncho mixes the blend of music he plays depending on the occasion. I attended the 1st set of the evening where diners predominate in the audience and he has tighter time constraints due to the 2nd set coming afterwards. I\u2019ve attended shows where he makes it more danceable in the late show of the evening.<\/p>\n<h3>Expecting Poncho&#8217;s New CD with Dizzy-Chano Music<\/h3>\n<p>All in all, it\u2019s always a good experience to go see <a href=\"https:\/\/latinomusiccafe.com\/2017\/06\/19\/cafe-poncho-sanchez-new-albums-jazz-alley-tjader\/\">Poncho Sanchez<\/a> and his Latin Jazz band, and I\u2019m looking forward to the September release of his new CD featuring the music of Dizzy Gillespie and legendary Cuban \u201cconguero\u201d Chano Pozo.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poncho Sanchez brought some Latin heat from California and energized the Seattle\u00a0Dimitrious\u2019 Jazz Alley stage with a different repertoire than from his previous presentations.
