Latin Music Album: Olga Tanon “Una Mujer” Review

(English version below after Spanish version) Lo primero que noté cuando escuché el nuevo album de la puertorriqueña Olga Tañón es que es mucho mejor que su anterior album de música latina titulado “Ni Una Lágrima Más”.

“Una Mujer” alcanzó el lugar #6 en la lista de Billboard “Top Hot Latin Albums” al proveer mayormente merengues y música de mucha energía, e incluyendo 4 duetos con 4 cantantes los cuales le dieron al album un aire de frescura y credibilidad.

Que Me Gustó de “Una Mujer”

• Buenas canciones – las canciones en “Una Mujer” en su mayoría están bien escritas (muchas son de la autoría de la misma Olga) y con muy buenos arreglos. La música y los ritmos tocan en los puntos fuertes de Olga Tañón como cantante, con merengues energéticos, y hasta hubo espacio para una Salsa “No Mientas Más” la cual Olga también la interpreta en estilo de balada.

• Duetos Fantasticos – los cantantes invitados incluyen a luminarias de la música latina como las leyendas dominacanas del merengue, Johnny Ventura y Fernandito Villalona, además del astro venezolano de la Salsa, Oscar D’León (quien curiosamente no canta en la canción de Salsa, sino en un merengue), y también incluye el disco al merenguero puertorriqueño y problemático social Elvis Crespo. Aparte de estos 4 grandes, Olga Tañón tambien hace dueto con el joven y talentoso productor y cantautor dominicano Maffio, en el merengue-electrónico “Una Mujer Como Yo”, tema el cual se ha convertido en el 2ndo sencillo promocional de “Una Mujer”.

• Enfoque en Música Bailable – este album está enfocado en música energética, alegre y bailable. Si, el album incluye una balada, pero el album tiene espacio para esto sin que distraiga de su enfoque alegre y para el bailador. En su album anterior “Ni Una Lagrima Más”, Olga Tañón trató de hacerlo mitad merengue y mitad baladas, resultando en un album sin enfoque ni ritmo. Olga no cometió el mismo error dos veces.
• Mis Favoritas – como dije arriba, pienso que los duetos estuvieron muy bien logrados. Me encantó “Pura Sabrosura” con Johnny Ventura. La verdad que “el caballo negro” no pierde su chispa. También me gustó mucho “Fue Tanto el Tiempo” con Fernandito Villalona. Como Salsero que soy, me gustó la Salsa “No Mientas Más”, su primera buena Salsa (bueno, que yo recuerde) desde “Unicornio” en uno de sus primeros discos como solista hace ya mas de 20 años. Me gusta como Olga canta la Salsa, a pesar de no ser Salsera.

Sugerencias para Olga Tañón “Una Mujer”

Contrario a su disco anterior, que como ya dije, tiene varias cosas las cuales no me gustaron, no pude encontrar nada que no fuera de mi agrado en éste. Así que me voy a poner rebuscón y mencionar algo que creo pudo haberse hecho mejor.

La canción “Que Bonita Eres” es un tributo que Olga le rinde a Venezuela y la canta en dueto con el astro venezolano Oscar D’León. Pero me parece que la canción es muy genérica en su alago. Por ejemplo, Olga canta…”me gustan tus montañas, tus playas, y tu gente…”. Caray, eso se puede decir de cualquier país in Latinoamérica. Si vas a rendirle homenaje a un país, se más específica en lo que te gusta de ese país, nombrando lugares, eventos, música, y gente por su nombre. Si uno escucha canciones de homenaje a otros paises, uno por lo general encuentra esos detalles.

Eso dicho, a mi comoquiera me gustó la canción por su ritmo, el dueto con el Sonero del Mundo, y por la intención de rendirle tributo al hermano país de Venezuela.

Mi Recomendación de “Una Mujer”

En mi opinión, “Una Mujer” es la mejor producción discográfica de Olga Tañón en varios años. Este album se enfoca en el lado fuerte de Olga (por lo menos, comercialmente hablando) que es canciones bailables de mucha energía y alegría. Los cantantes invitados son fantásticos y le dan al disco un toque de variedad el cual no hubiese logrado si hubiese cantando todas la canciones ella sola.

Si usted es de los que todavía toca esos CDs viejos de Olga Tañón, de la época de la “Mujer de Fuego”, entonces éste es el disco de Olga que ha estado esperando.

Pienso que Olga Tañón necesitaba lanzar un disco como éste para re-establecerse tanto artísticamente como comercialmente. Comercialmente, este disco debe venderse mucho mejor que sus más recientes proyectos. Además, los artistas necesitan expandir y experimentar con su arte. Eso es parte de la escencia de ser artista, y Olga ha crecido como artista por hacer eso. Pero de vez en cuando es bueno que los artistas vuelvan a tocar base con sus raíces artísticas. Eso es lo que Olga ha hecho con “Una Mujer”. Estás deacuerdo?

The very first thing I noticed when I listend to “Una Mujer” is that it’s a much better and focused Latin music album than her previous album “Ni Una Lagrima Mas”.

“Una Mujer” made it to #6 in the Billboard Top Hot Latin Albums list by providing mostly high energy merengues, along with 4 guest singers that give the album freshness and credibility.

What I Liked About “Una Mujer”

• Good songs – the songs in this album are well written (most have Olga Tanon’s pen in them) and well arranged. The music hit on Olga Tanon’s sweet spot of high energy merengues, although there room for a nice Salsa song “No Mientas Mas”, which Olga also delivers it as a ballad.
• Great duets – guest singers include dominican merengue legends Johnny Ventura and Fernandito Villalona, venezuelan Salsa idol Oscar D’Leon (who also sings a merengue; not the Salsa song in the album), and contemporary and socially problematic puertorican merengue star Elvis Crespo. Oh, and there is also a duet with the young dominican producer and singer Maffio, in an electronic-merengue “Una Mujer Como Yo”, which was the album’s 2nd promotional single. La Tanon reserved some of the album best songs to sing them with her guest singers.
• Dance album focus – this album is themed around high energy, happy, and danceable music. Yes, there is a ballad version of one song, but there is plenty of room for one or even two of these, which don’t distract from the album’s main purpose. Her previous album, “Ni Una Lagrima Mas” tried to be both, a half merengue, half ballad album that didn’t achieve either.
• My Favorites – as I said above, I thought the duet songs were well done. I loved “Pura Sabrosura” with Johnny Ventura, and “Fue Tanto el Tiempo” with Fernandito Villalona. As a Salsero, I also liked the only Salsa song “No Mientas Mas”, her first nice Salsa song since “Unicornio” in her debut album as a soloist almost 21 years ago. I like how Olga sings Salsa.

Suggestions for Olga Tanon on “Una Mujer”

Contrary to her previous album in which I had a few things I didn’t like, I couldn’t find anything here, so I’m just going to be picky and mention something that could’ve been done better. The song “Que Bonita Eres” (duet with Oscar D’Leon) is a tribute to Venezuela, but I found it extremely generic.

Olga says “…I like your mountains, your beaches, and your people…”. Well, you can say this of just about any country in Latin America. If you’re going to do a homage to a country, you should get very specific on some things like which places, events, music, and people, with names. Listen to songs dedicated to other countries and you’ll find a deeper level of detail on these. That said, I do like the song for its rhythm, the duet with Oscar, and the good intention.

My Recommendation

In my opinion “Una Mujer” is the best produced and executed album Olga Tanon has released in recent memory. This album plays to her strengths with good focus and intention of delivering high quality danceable music. The guest singers are marvelous and give the album the variety and touch that doing the same songs by herself would have missed.

If you keep playing those same old Olga Tanon albums of la “Mujer de Fuego” years, then you will love this album in your collection. This is the Olga Tanon album you’ve been waiting.

I think Olga needed an album like this, which re-established her roots solidly, and from where which she can now do other musical projects. I belive artists need to expand and experiment with their art, but every now and then, come back to revisit their roots. Olga has done that with “Una Mujer”. Do you agree?
