“Current” is the 9th CD by 3 time Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto. Jovino comes back with his Seattle-based Quinteto for this recording.

The Quinteto is staffed with Harvey Wainapel (clarinet and saxes), Chuck Deardorf (bass), Mark Ivester (drums), Jeff Busch (percussion) and special guests Ben Thomas (vibraphone), Caroline Corcoran and Lena Simon (vocals).

What I l Like About “Current”

Easy, mellow compositions – Jovino Santos Neto brings his Rio de Janairo music background to this album, and one of the highlights is the easy samba, bossa nova, and other Brazilian rhythms he imparts to all his compositions, mixed with progressive jazz elements. The album is composed almost entirely of soft melodies that highlight mostly Harvey Wainapel’s sax and/or clarinet.

Rhythm variation – Jovino Santos Neto mixes the Brazilian rhythms in the album in a way that it keeps a nice flow from song to song, keeping the listening experience interesting throughout the album.

Good Quinteto – Jovino brings a four good musicians to the recording studio, and the 5 of them showcase good chemistry in executing the songs. Most of the highlights go to Harvey Wainapel and Jovino himself in the keyboards, besides the special guests in specific songs.

My favorite pieces in the album are “Vivendo No Presente” (a nice easy samba swing with good participation from the Quinteto), and “Matraca” (whichs seems like a bossa nova with nice influence from the sax and flute).
The sound quality of the album is excellent as in all Jovino Santos Neto productions, making the album a delight to listen to.

Suggestioins to Jovino Santos Neto About “Current”

The only thing I didn’t like of this album was the final song; “A Fonte”. Within an album with soft melodies, “A Fonte” was too slow and too predictable. I just found myself loosing interest when this song came along.

Recommendation on “Current”

I truly enjoyed “Current” as a high quality album of soft melodies delivered in a unique Brazilian style. I like to listen to this kind of music when I want to relax after a though day or when you want to enjoy a conversation but don’t want to be overwhelmed with the music. This is great music to sip in Brazilian rhythms, sprinkled with jazz elements, which you may decide to accompany with a nice bottle of wine.

If you are a fan of Brazilian music and can enjoy a mellower tempo, then you will surely enjoy “Current”.
